Larch, Western (H) (Larix occidentalis)   Found throughout the western US and Canada. Mistakenly called “Tamarak”. The heartwood is light reddish brown similar to Douglas-fir with the contrast between early and late wood providing an esthetic growth ring figure. The wood is straight grained and exceptionally beautiful when quartersawn (vertical or edge grain). The wood works well with hand and machines. Tends to tear if cutting edges are not sharp. Makes a beautiful floor or when used in furniture or millwood. Best finished in natural oil. Specific gravity .59
